In this video we will talk about how to influence others by the way you introduce yourself.
For those of you who do networking face-to-face or meet people, here’s
something to change how you’re perceived by those people.
Let me tell you a story.
A college class was to have a substitute teacher come in and teach. Before the teacher came in, the class was given a written introduction with the speaker’s credits, who they were and all the
different things about them.
What happened is half the class got one introduction, and the other half the class got a different piece of paper with a different introduction on it.
The speaker comes in. He talks. He tells jokes. He teaches. He does all the different things for class, and then when he was all done they surveyed the class and asked what they thought of the speaker.
Half the class that got the one sheet of paper thought he was great. That he was approachable, and knowledgeable. All kinds different good things about him.
The other half of the class saw him as cold, distant, incompetent and all other kinds of different things.
Now you wonder, what was on that piece of paper that made half the class think one way and the other half of the class think the other way.
Well what it turns out is that piece of paper had exactly the same thing except for one word.
For the half of the class that thought the speaker was great and approachable, when they were describing the speaker they talked about him in terms of all of these different things and they described him as quite warm.
In the other half of the class, the ones who thought him distant and unapproachable, that word warm was substituted with cold.
One word change made all the difference in the world to those students.
Now what does that mean for you? What it means for you is that when you’re introducing yourself to a group or to a person, try to
include a word that you want people to think about you.
It can be one like friendly or knowledgeable. Use whatever it is that you want to prime they’re thinking toward before you get to it.
You’d say hey I’m the friendly realtor or I’m the knowledgeable sales consultant. By adding that one word you get people to think in that direction and everything that you do after that will be colored by that particular word.
So as you’re working on your presentation or working on talking to somebody remember to include a word or specific words that get people to think about you in a certain way.
It’s not about what you know, it’s about how you make people feel.
